Domaine Mikaël Gaget, Morgon
Just south of the illustrious Fleurie lies the village of Morgon. There we find the very best vineyard of this appellation; the 'Côte du Py'. An old volcano that has been extinct for centuries. The soil consists almost entirely of granite. In the middle of this famous 'Côte du Py' lie the vineyards of Maurice Gaget. He also owns a plot in the 'Grands-Cras' vineyard. Before he decided to bottle independently in 1984, his (Gamay) grapes went to the large local cooperative, but because of the potential of his parcels, he decided to opt for the adventure. Well, he succeeded more than excellently. The wines of Maurice Gaget are an example of fine Morgon's. Maurice Gaget has since handed over the baton to his son Mikaël at the old family business. He himself can usually be found in the vineyard, while his son Mikaël is involved in sales and vinification. A beautiful duo!
