The Domaine de la Cabernelle is located among the vineyards of Bourgueillois near the town of Benais. The Caslot Pontonnier family (Claudia, Franck and Bertrand) have their fields here and live in a beautiful house above their wine cellars. It is all Cabernet Franc as a grape variety that rings the bell here. The entire vineyard is planted with it and those fields extend over the AOCs of Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil.
The diversity of terroirs is great. There is sand, gravel, tufa and clay-silt soils. This, combined with the hours of sunshine on the slopes and the age of the vines, gives a diverse range of wines. Add to this the fact that the viticulture is completely organic and the ingredients for a fine product are in place.
Domaine de la Cabernelle is a house about 400 years old and fully restored. It is built above cellars dug into the tuff. That excavation of tuff was done for the construction of churches, houses and the castles of the Loire between the year 1000 and 1400. So the old converted quarries are now used to mature the wines. A fine constant temperature in summer and winter of between 12 and 13 degrees helps well.
